We welcome guest artist Ted Westby, who shares his work from his project in which he embraces the dusty, lo-fi side of image making. Using a small point-and-shoot camera to capture various computer screens showing high-end portraits he created in his portraiture business, he proclaims a deep love and fascination with unpolished, raw glamour shots. Gritty textures and random light interference adorn striking subjects as they are filtered through the murky digital pipeline.

Three group shows will be in display:

Gridlock: Participants create grids out of themes of their choice, from portraits to street objects to buildings, and more. Inspired by the work of Bernd and Hill Becher, we want to give people a chance to express themselves in a series of images in which the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.

Fixing a Shadow: Before pixels and digital sensors took over the world, photography was often described as “fixing a shadow,” in reference to the chemical fixer used in darkrooms to neutralize the paper’s sensitivity to light. In the group show, we asked our participants to create images that revel in the shade and bask in the shapes created by the absence of light.

Fabricating Evidence: This exhibit asks participants to investigate their idea of the “forensic” in photography. Whether it be some form of crime in progress, real or imaginary, or mysterious items that indicate some sort of mischief, or hand-crafted detective boards, we bring to you some admissible photos for your witnessing pleasure.

Fall 2023 Exhibition

Ending February 14th, so come by soon!

We are excited to feature guest artist Kathryn Dunlevie’s project “Cover Versions,” a rollicking set of vintage record covers remixed with her own photographs. Fragments of time and culture are sifted together with modern elements to create bizarre and poetic collages, mysterious juxtapositions, and visual fugues.

In addition, Photography Workshop participants will be showing their own creative output as individual wall sections will be partitioned to display their personal portfolios and bits and pieces of their artistic journeys.

These personal projects will be part of Artspan’s Open Studios, a San Francisco tradition wherein local artists give visitors a chance to tour their studios and galleries, one neighborhood at a time. The South of Market schedule for Open Studios is November 11th and 12th.

6th on 7th Photography Workshop embraces an “art as therapy” approach dedicated to improving mental health amongst the underserved community in San Francisco’s South of Market neighborhood as well as military veterans interested in the art of photography and creative storytelling.

We view self-expression as a right, and want to give people the opportunity and platform to share their stories.
— Tom Ferentz, Founder

A project of Tenants and Owners Development Corporation (TODCO), the Photography Workshop has served the community since 1992.

Originally called “Sixth Street Photography Workshop” when it was founded by photographer and educator Tom Ferentz with support from TODCO, the program was designed to last only six months. Over thirty years, later we lucky to continue our mission of spreading the love of photography in San Francisco and beyond.
